The Shukokai Association
of Martial Arts (SAMA) is dedicated to bringing the benefits of Martial Arts
teachings to those who under normal circumstances would not be given the
opportunity. While self-defense application is taught at SAMA, it is not the
primary focus. Inner city children are exposed to dangers from external
sources very often, but the primary source of danger most children and young
adults face comes not from others but from themselves. Martial Arts can be
especially helpful to them in building their self-esteem, self-confidence,
and self-discipline, as well as giving them the wherewithal to withstand
life's negative influences. These benefits carry over into their everyday
lives. Another benefit provided by Martial Arts training is physical
fitness. Studies show that good health
and fitness habits learned early in life will provide health benefits
enduring well into adulthood The Shukokai Association of Martial
Arts has been teaching traditional Japanese Martial Arts to students of all
ages and abilities since 1990. Throughout the years, our dedication to the
students and our mission has remained unchanged. Our overall mission is to create
an environment that allows the students an opportunity to learn Martial Arts
while learning about themselves. Through our instruction, we
achieve our objectives of teaching and promoting the benefits of hard work
and dedication to the task at hand. Self-improvement is a journey on a long
and winding road that is full of lessons along the way. In order to learn
from these lessons, patience is required. In addition to improving health and
well being, our students gain self-confidence and learn the advantages of
hard work and commitment. Our goal is not to promote
competition among each other, but within one’s self. We emphasize that
students improve upon their efforts with each lesson. In order to earn the
next higher rank or belt, students must display the necessary characteristics
which include, but are not limited to, mutual respect for fellow students,
respect for one’s self, respect for those of higher rank, and the motivation
to improve each and every class. |
